Let's Talk About Health Today! =)

Today i felt a little unhappy because my best friend had severe headache due to hypertension... It made me wonder what does wealth mean to anyone if he or she has no health...

Question of The Day: What is money if you have no health and wellness of living?

Wealth means nothing to you if you don't have health.

Wealth is meant to give you prosperity in life, and so does pure happiness, love, social support, abundance of all sorts and play!

I've personally witnessed so many people who had a lot of money but tied down to commitments, commitments and commitments! Pressure, stress and probably unrealistic goals! And most importantly goals that might not align to their personal goals in life but purely company wide goals! Probably just for the money!

Am i going to tell you that money is bullshit? No! Because we probably can't live comfortably without money in today's materialistic world. And it might take plenty more years for people to reconsider the value of money as compared to the value of life on itself especially in booming Asia.

The key words are in Health and Wellness: Access to Wellbeing.

Let me summarize what i learned from there if i may.

"The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. Eating right, exercising, and sleeping well play an equal role in the prevention of infections and diseases. However, a good sense of self, a loving support network, and the potential for continued personal growth is also important to our overall wellbeing."

Let's be honest to acknowledge that there are a lot of uncontrollable factors that influence our health status: eg genetic, environmental and something else entirely.

However according to WHO, we can improve our overall health through both traditional and modern medicines when we are ill.

You should count your blessings in that as a Malaysian at least you have proximate access to some hospitals (though extravagantly expensive for the private hospitals, and years of queue or required to probably "convert" in order to get "first class citizen" treatment from the general hospitals. Meant not to create sentiments here, just a general comment i derived from hear say, apologies if i got it wrong.), at least some basic public transportation (though slow and too much resources drained into selected few people's pockets, also hear say.), some green parks still available even in the KL city (though "famed" with snatch, drug abuse and rape news, also hear say.), and some social support systems for the poor and underprivileged (though you might say again it might favor "the predominant citizen", again hear say, apologies for not substantiating hear say comments with factual evidence, i don't think it is necessary and my point is not to condemn but to count our blessings.), etc.

So here you go, from the report of Canada and WHO's 2002 Social Determinants of Health Across Life Span, below are the top 10 controllable determinants of people's health:

1. early life,
2. education,
3. employment and working conditions,
4. food security,
5. health services,
6. housing,
7. income and income distribution,
8. social in/exclusion,
9. social safety net (voluntary & community sector contributions)
10. unemployment and job security.

Again quoted from http://issues.tigweb.org/health?gclid=CPK_iOf5vacCFQd66wodEmCJXA,

"Sustainable health and wellness is not only part of our survival but it is also a continuously rewarding way to live out our entire lives."

If you ask me what else should be looked into for health and wellbeing, personally i will suggest the following Top 10:

1. your beloved family,
2. slow down your life and reach out to see and feel others' lives,
3. yoga,
4. taichi,
5. any other healing therapies you are currently practicing (eg Prana Healing, Massages, Aerobics, etc),
6. religious gatherings that promote sharing, social support, love and peace; not superiority and social exclusion,
7. give back no matter how rich or poor you are (remember, you don't have to be a millionaire in order to give, you have many other ways to give apart from money. Time spent and effort to reach out is worth 100 times more than the monetary worth if you ask me, probably not quantifiable by any currency in the world.)
8. smile or laugh heartily,
9. make someone else smile or laugh heartily today,
10. hold a child's hand today, squat to his or her tiny-sized height and squeeze your adult brain to his arguably peanut-sized brain but ingenuous baby heart to associate with his or her feelings. You'll see miracles i guarantee you. =)

As always, love and peace from,
